Both Firefox 2.0 and Internet Explorer version 7 allows you to add your own search engine to their list of engines directly from the search engine drop-down.

Quick access to search engines makes it very convenient and quick to perform queries for various reasons, whether it is looking for a movie or looking up a dictionary word.

If you are using Firefox 2 or IE 7, and haven't looked at the search engine selection yet, now is the time to check it out. At the right there are two examples. The topmost is from Firefox, the bottom one is from Internet Explorer 7. If you try it on this site you should see the KF Webs search engine as an available engine.

Do you have a search engine on your website, and would like to make it easily accessible for your returning visitors?

The search engine is added though a common plugin interface, and made known for the browser by adding a reference tag, which tells the browser it can find the information needed about the search engine, in the head section of the website as demonstrated later on.

The resource file is really a small eXtensible Markup Language (XML) file, which for your convenience can be automatically generated in Step 1 below. Then all that is needed is a slight modification of the website, as shown in Step 2. And then you are ready to roll.

Step 1: Generate XML resource file

Please enter the name of your website:

Please enter a small description. If left empty the description will be the same as the name specified above:

If you have a favorite icon (favicon) for the website, specify the full URL to it below:

Now, finally, specify the URL that is used by the search engine. Replace the position of the search terms by <TERM> (including the brackets)

Now that should be it. Press generate and save the file you get.

Step 2: Edit the website

Now upload the XML file to your website, and add a tag that looks like

<link rel="search" type="application/opensearchdescription+xml" href="http://www.kfwebs.net/opensearch.xml" title="KF Webs" />

This is to be placed in the <head> head section of the website. Substitute the URL with one pointing to your newly generated file, and write in the short name you want as title

Now others should be able to add your search to their browser directly. Enjoy. Now that you are done with adding the search engine you might want to read about securing your email communication as well:
